Back in 1967...

• The Vietnam War witnessed a terrible event which was to become commonplace. A Buddhist nun set herself on fire in Saigon, protesting the policies of Vietnamese Premier Hwen Kow Kee. Even though the sentiments in this country were beginning to turn against the U.S. participation in the war, few public figures spoke out against it. Gen. James Gavin, of Mount Carmel, a soldier who had proved his courage beyond any doubt many times, did speak out. He urged President Lyndon B. Johnson to pull our troops out, saying Vietnam was poisoning America at home. Gen. Gavin was right, but the war would drag on for many more years.
