Drug import amendment halts health debate

WASHINGTON - -- Expanding access to low-cost prescription drugs from overseas might look like a sure winner in the effort to make health care more affordable. President Barack Obama has long supported the idea. So have many Democrats and a significant number of Republicans.

But the seemingly popular idea brought the Senate health care debate to a standstill Thursday, as Democrats divided over whether they should bow to the drug industry's fierce opposition.
