Ajahn Thanuttaro Bhikkhu, Buddhist monk, from Chithurst on the coming solstice
...What would we think a wise person's approach might be to dealing with seasonal change?
The dark evenings and unwelcoming weather conditions affect the world around us, and yet why do we allow this to adversely affect our inner world, our moods and emotions?
Personally I amuse myself with the idea that I must have been a hedgehog in a previous life as I am often consumed with the feeling I should be hibernating as winter approaches, just sleeping it off until springtime!
We can notice the urge to resist or try to avoid unpleasant feelings. We can take another holiday perhaps, but that is not always possible or it might not turn out to be a successful escape anyway. Or we choose to distract ourselves and bury the mind in dreams, movies and fantasies which leaves us feeling dull, disappointed or scattered and confused.
