Plans to store information about every phone call, email and internet visit in the United Kingdom have in effect been abandoned by the Government.
The Home Office confirmed the "Big Brother" scheme had been delayed until after the election amid protests that it would be intrusive and open to abuse. Although ministers publicly insisted yesterday that they remained committed to the scheme, they have decided not to include the contentious measure in next week's Queen's Speech, the Government's final legislative programme before the election.
The headline says "cancel," but the story says "delay." Very typical. Delay and wait for another time when the people are tired or distracted. That said, if there is any chance they really will cancel this plan, this could be a business opportunity for the NSA--just add Britain (all of it) to the database we already have. Give them the service as a freebie for a few years and then start charging them for access once they get used to having all that info. Might be a good idea to reach out to Henry Paulson to sell the idea because he has clearly demonstrated that he knows how to get the money. If things go well with Britain, we can chain-store this thing around the world and maybe get back on top again. ABN
