4. QUOTATIONS AND BONUS LINKS: IMPORTANT NEWS STORIES

"History is a vast early warning system." - Norman Cousins (1912-1990)

"... every tax or rate, forcibly taken from an unwilling person, is immoral and oppressive." - Auberon Herbert (1838-1906), in 'The Principles of Voluntaryism', 1897

"The type and formula of most schemes of philanthropy or humanitarianism is this: A and B put their heads together to decide what C shall be made to do for D. The radical vice of all these schemes, from a sociological point of view, is that C is not allowed a voice in the matter, and his position, character, and interests, as well as the ultimate effects on society through C's interests, are entirely overlooked. I call C the Forgotten Man."
-- William Graham Sumner (1840-1910) Professor at Yale, in his essay, "The Forgotten Man"

"Every actual state is corrupt. Good men must not obey laws too well."
- Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882)

"Let us render the tyrant no aid; let us not hold the light by which he can trace the footprints of our flying brother." - Frederick Douglass (1818-1895), escaped slave, Abolitionist, author

"If I want to be free from any other man's dictation, I must understand that I can have no other man under my control." - William Graham Sumner (1840-1910)

"Disobedience, in the eyes of anyone who has read history, is man's original virtue. It is through disobedience that progress had been made, through disobedience and through rebellion."
- Oscar Wilde (1854-1900)

"The notion that the church, the press, and the universities should serve the state is essentially a Communist notion. In a free society these institutions must be wholly free -- which is to say that their function is to serve as checks upon the state." - Alan Barth (1906-1979)

"The more gross the fraud, the more glibly will it go down, and the more greedily will it be swallowed, since folly will always find faith wherever impostors will find impudence." - Christian Nestell Bovee (1820-1904)

"It is the absolute right of the state to supervise the formation of public opinion."
- Joseph Goebbels (1897-1945) Nazi Propaganda Minister, Oct. 1933

"...there was no point in seeking to convert the intellectuals. For intellectuals would never be converted and would anyway always yield to the stronger, 'and this will always be the man in the street.' Arguments must therefore be crude, clear and forcible, and appeal to emotions and instincts, not the intellect. Truth was unimportant and entirely subordinate to tactics and psychology... Hatred and contempt must be directed at particular individuals." - H. Trevor-Roper (Ed.), The Goebbels Diaries

"Having gathered all power to itself, [the State] has become the sole focus of all conflict, and it must construct totalitarian defences to match its total exposure." - Anthony de Jasay (1925- ) in 'The State', 1985

"The state remains, as it was in the beginning, the common enemy of all well-disposed, industrious and decent men." - H. L. Mencken (1880-1956)

"The great non sequitur committed by defenders of the State, including classical Aristotelian and Thomist philosophers, is to leap from the necessity of society to the necessity of the State." - Murray N. Rothbard (1926-1995) Dean of the Austrian School of Economics

"After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small, complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd." - Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859), 'Democracy in America', Vol. II

"Whoever controls the volume of money in any country is absolute master of all industry and commerce... and when you realize that the entire system is very easily controlled, one way or another, by a few powerful men at the top, you will not have to be told how periods of inflation and depression originate." - President James Garfield, opponent of the international banking cartel, assassinated in 1881

"In some ways she was far more acute than Winston, and far less susceptible to Party propaganda. Once when he happened in some connection to mention the war against Eurasia, she startled him by saying casually that in her opinion the war was not happening. The rocket bombs which fell daily on London were probably fired by the Government of Oceania itself, 'just to keep people frightened'. This was an idea that had literally never occurred to him." - George Orwell, '1984'

"At any given moment, public opinion is a chaos of superstition, misinformation, and prejudice." - Gore Vidal (10/03/1925-), 1965

"The interests behind the Bush Administration, such as the CFR, The Trilateral Commission -- founded by Brzezinski for David Rockefeller -- and the Bilderberger Group, have prepared for and are now moving to implement open world dictatorship within the next five years. They are not fighting against terrorists. They are fighting against citizens." - Dr. Johannes B. Koeppl, PhD, former German defense ministry official and advisor to former NATO Secretary General Manfred Werne. Source: November 6, 2001, interview with Michael C. Ruppert, From The Wilderness Publications, 2001

"There is some good news... Afghanistan will be terminal for the American empire, yes. Which is a happy way of looking at it. We'll be out of the empire game, rapidly. But it's too late for the country and the constitution." - Gore Vidal (10/03/1925- ), quoted by Johann Hari in 'Gore

5. JIM SHAWVAN'S ASTROLOGICAL PREDICTIONS, NOVEMBER 2009:

Jupiter conjoins Neptune * Saturn squares Pluto * Sun sequiquads Uranus * Mercury sesquiquads Uranus * Venus quincunxes Uranus * Mars sesquiquads Uranus * Mercury squares Mars * Sun squares Mars * Mercury conjoins Sun * Sun squares Jupiter * Mercury squares Jupiter * Sun semisquares Saturn * Mercury semisquares Saturn * Mercury semisquares Pluto * Sun semisquares Pluto * Mercury squares Neptune * Sun squares Neptune * Venus squares Mars * Venus sesquiquads Uranus * Venus squares Jupiter * Venus semisquares Pluto * Venus semisquares Saturn * Venus squares Neptune * Mars sesquiquads Pluto * Mercury squares Uranus * Mars semisquares Saturn

From April 2009 until January 2010, Jupiter (optimism, wealth, success) conjoins Neptune (illusion, delusion, self-deception). Politicians, bankers, and the public are almost all equally clueless about the economic disaster into which the United States and the entire world are headed. Mostly, they are whistling in the pitch-black darkness as they walk toward the edge of the cliff. People who talk about "green shoots" and "recovery" are delusional, and this will become clear soon enough.

From September 2009 to October 2010, Saturn (limitation, frustration, delay, responsibility) squares Pluto (irresistible transformation, overwhelming force). Remember the old line about an irresistible force meeting an immovable object? This combination is about as close as it comes to such a confrontation in the real world. Conflict of wills, and conflict of our human will with the nature of reality, take center stage. Don't block the road - that bulldozer won't slow down just because you're in the way. This aspect is happening in the earliest degrees of Cardinal signs, which some astrologers call "the World Axis" - and that means some of the huge changes coming up will be highly visible and will affect millions or even billions of people.

Until November 1, the Sun (vitality, self-confidence) sesquiquadrates Uranus (innovation, surprises, upsets). This aspect will affect people who have important natal points at 7-8 Fixed and 22-23 Mutable. Some of us could be lying awake at night with new ideas running through our minds so fast that we can't keep track of them all. Whole new vistas can open up to us now.

On November 1 and 2, Mercury (the ordinary mind) sesquiquads Uranus (the innovative mind). This aspect will affect people who have important natal points at 7-8 Fixed and 22-23 Mutable. Yet another reason why we can lie awake thinking, too excited to sleep. New ideas flood in.

On November 1 and 2, Venus (the urge to relate) quincunxes Uranus (the urge for freedom). This aspect will affect people who have important natal points at 22-23 Libra and Pisces. This time around, Uranus is the problem and Venus is the solution. That makes it nice and simple - just stay committed to your existing relationships, and let the urge to wander go away on its own, which it will do shortly.

Through November 4, Mars (energy, rashness, anger) sesquiquadrates Uranus (upsets, surprises). This aspect will affect people who have important natal points at 7-8 Fixed and 22-23 Mutable. This combination is exciting but accident-prone (though it takes the involvement of at least one other planet to bring an accident). Drive carefully and don't get on any rickety ladders. Hire somebody else to fix the roof, and for their sake, do it only after this aspect is over.

Through November 7, Mercury (words) squares Mars (rashness, anger). It requires self-discipline to keep from blurting out hurtful, tactless words at this time. Self-discipline has to come from somewhere else, because it sure doesn't come from Mars. Where is Saturn when you need him? Remember that a closed mouth gathers no foot.

Through November 10, the Sun (vitality, self-confidence) squares Mars (energy, impulsiveness, anger). If you feel the need to work off some energy, and you don't have hard physical work to do, go for a run or a workout at the gym, or go dancing. Don't let that Mars energy get bottled up, or it will burst out in ways that are counterproductive, to put it mildly.

Through November 16, Mercury (business, busyness) conjoins the Sun (vitality, self-confidence). Mercury slowly passes the Sun and then pulls ahead of it, staying within a 7-degree orb this whole time. This combination is very good for getting things done, and for making new plans (other things being equal). This is more or less the opposite of Mercury retrograde!

From November 2 to 18, the Sun (vitality, self-confidence) squares Jupiter (optimism, success, expansion). These two bodies are so compatible that even a square is not particularly difficult, except that it may encourage overspending and overindulging. That aside, it can bring blessings to folks who have enough other things working in their favor right now.

From November 3 to 9, Mercury (detailed analysis) squares Jupiter (seeing the big picture). Ideally we are aware enough of details that we don't mess up, and aware of the larger view to keep the details in perspective. In the real world, our understanding is not always that clear, of course. Still, this combination encourages us to strive for that kind of clarity.

From November 6 to 9, the Sun (vitality, self-confidence) semisquares Saturn (frustration, limitation, delay, but also responsibility). This aspect will affect people who have important natal points at 0-1 Cardinal and 15-16 Fixed. If circumstances seem to be blocking your path right now, just persevere - the blockage may fall away very quickly.

On November 6 and 7, Mercury (business, busyness) semisquares Saturn (seriousness, limitation, delay). This aspect will affect people who have important natal points at 0-1 Cardinal and 15-16 Fixed. Keep your nose to the grindstone, your ear to the ground, and your shoulder to the wheel. Now try to work in that position.

On November 6 and 7, Mercury (communication) semisquares Pluto (overwhelming force, irresistible transformation). This aspect will affect people who have important natal points at 0-2 Cardinal and 15-17 Fixed. You may find yourself under pressure to commit to some course of action, perhaps even to sign a contract.

From November 7 to 9, the Sun (vitality, self-confidence) semisquares Pluto (irresistible transformation, overwhelming force). This aspect will affect people who have important natal points at 0-2 Cardinal and 15-17 Fixed. Changing circumstances in your life may require you to make some changes in turn. For some of us, these may be very big changes.

From November 7 to 16, Mercury (communication, thought) squares Neptune (illusion, delusion, self-deception). The best way to use this combination is in the arts, specifically those arts which involve words - poetry, song, theatre, film. If you have the opportunity to be creative at this time, take it. If your schedule does not allow that, at least give yourself some time to enjoy these arts. The worst side of this aspect is deception, either consciously intended or otherwise.

From November 8 to 22, the Sun (vitality, self-confidence) squares Neptune (illusion, delusion, self-deception). Dream time. Allow yourself to play, and to enjoy all of the arts. Creativity is a wonderful outlet for the energies of this aspect. Unfortunately, that can include the creativity of the snake-oil salesman, whether in business, politics, or religion.

From November 11 to 26, Venus (love, beauty, charm) squares Mars (drive, energy, assertiveness). In classic myth, Venus and Mars were the two lovers who defied convention to be together, although Venus was already married to Hephaestus. This combination is very sexy, but also potentially quarrelsome - and Mars in particular doesn't give a damn about other people's feelings. It's easy to produce bad karma when we're in lust. Exert self-control.

On November 13 and 14, Venus (love, beauty, the relationship urge) sesquiquadrates Uranus (the urge for freedom). This aspect will affect people who have important natal points at 6-8 Fixed and 21-23 Mutable. You may meet someone new who charms you. If you're available, and looking only for a fling, that's fine. If you're in a committed relationship, let this temptation pass you by. One of the dumber things people do is to leave relationships that work, to follow passing attractions of the moment.

From November 17 to 29, Venus (love, beauty) squares Jupiter (expansion, success). The two classical benefics in hard aspect usually bring pleasure in large doses. The only drawbacks can be overindulgence and the temptation to be irresponsible. Enjoy yourself, but remember that you will be back to your routine soon enough.

From November 20 to 22, Venus (love, beauty) semisquares Pluto (irresistible transformation, overwhelming force). This aspect will affect people who have important natal points at 1-3 Cardinal and 16-18 Fixed. If you fall in love with a mysterious stranger at this time, be prepared for a wild ride, perhaps even to Hell and back. Remember the myth of Persephone - and if you don't remember it, look it up. Once you get involved to a certain point, your life changes forever, and it does not get easier after that.

From November 20 to 22, Venus (love, beauty, charm) semisquares Saturn (frustration, limitation, delay, but also responsibility). This aspect will affect people who have important natal points at 1-3 Cardinal and 16-18 Fixed. We usually experience hard aspects of Venus and Saturn in either of two ways - we can make a commitment to a relationship, or else we can find that our efforts to start or continue a relationship are blocked. If the latter, be glad that this aspect will be over quickly.

From November 21 to December 2, Venus (love, beauty, charm) squares Neptune (illusion, delusion, self-deception). The arts are the best outlet for this combination - creating or enjoying a beautiful illusion. Falling in love under this influence virtually guarantees that you are not seeing the beloved clearly, but are only seeing a projection of your own desires. Thus there can be bitter disappointment later on, when reality finally dawns.

From November 25 to December 5, Mars (energy, assertiveness, even violence) sesquiquadrates Pluto (irresistible transformation, overwhelming force). This aspect will affect people who have important natal points at 1-3 Cardinal and 16-18 Fixed. Many astrologers think of Pluto as the "higher octave" of Mars, meaning that the two planets have much in common. Neither is easy and pleasant to deal with, though it is possible to direct the energy of Mars into harmless outlets such as sports and dancing. Pluto's energy cannot be consciously redirected - we simply have to go along for the ride. Expect some things to change in ways that you have no control over. Think of it as surfing the waves of Pluto's energy.

From November 26 to December 5, Mercury (the ordinary mind) squares Uranus (the innovative mind). New ideas bring yet more excitement -- and maybe new people in our lives as well. Uranus governs surprises and upsets, and we can never foresee exactly what it's going to bring, but it usually proves to be beneficial in the long run.

From November 28 to January 2, Mars (energy, action, assertiveness, aggression) semisquares Saturn (frustration, limitation, delay, responsibility). At the start of this long-lasting aspect, it will affect people who have important natal points at 1-3 Cardinal and 16-18 Fixed. As Saturn moves slowly forward, and Mars slows down and goes retrograde in mid-December, it will affect points as late as 5 Cardinal and 20 Fixed. The only thing that Mars and Saturn have in common is hard work, since that expresses the energy of Mars and the responsibility of Saturn at the same time. Right now, you are best off working as hard as you've ever worked in your life. The opposite way of expressing Mars-Saturn is through conflict, normally anger towards authority figures. We'll see plenty of that in the news, up to and including violence.

6. MEDITATION ON LOVINGKINDNESS, COMPASSION,
SYMPATHETIC JOY, AND EQUANIMITY

The following meditation is known as "The Divine Abodes" or "The Four Immeasurables". Reciting these words to ourselves is always appropriate, no matter what the circumstances. Start by saying "May I have happiness", etc., through all four lines; then repeat, inserting the name of someone you like; then again with the name of someone who's neutral to you; and
finally with the name of someone whom you don't like. (It may take a while before you are comfortable doing this for the ones you don't like - but it's very important in the long run.) This practice is beneficial for us and for everyone with whom we come in contact.

May all living beings have happiness and the causes of happiness.
May we all be free from suffering and the causes of suffering.
May we always rejoice in the happiness of others.
May we abide in equanimity, free from attachment and aversion.

And a wonderful affirmation from Raymon Grace:

"May I always be in the right place at the right time to do as much good as possible."
