Mennonites in Dexter are leaving Maine for religious reasons after the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV), headed by Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, refused an accommodation that would allow them to avoid violating their religious objections to commercial insurance.
Mark Nolt, a Mennonite father of 13 living in Dexter, spoke with The Maine Wire on Wednesday about his decision to leave the state along with other members of his religious community.
“We’ve been working with the state now for six-and-a-half years on that, and just finally chose to give up and move out of state to be able to hold to our convictions,” Nolt told The Maine Wire.
Nolt explained that their troubles with Maine’s state government stem from their religious prohibition on commercial insurance, including vehicle insurance, which Maine requires.
Mennonites eschew commercial insurance for a few reasons, he explained, including a belief that they should rely on their own community for support rather than on outside corporations. According to Nolt, they also believe that insurance takes away from trust in God and leads to a more careless outlook on life.

President Putin and I will then meet in an agreed upon location, Budapest, Hungary, to see if we can bring this “inglorious” War, between Russia and Ukraine, to an end. President Zelenskyy and I will be meeting tomorrow, in the Oval Office, where we will discuss my conversation with President Putin, and much more. I believe great progress was made with today’s telephone conversation.
Friends I have watched decline into alcoholism all displayed this trait.

US President Donald Trump is reportedly considering a major overhaul of the country’s refugee system, and it may forever change the way people seek and are given refuge on American soil.
Documents obtained by The New York Times suggest the changes would give preference to specific groups, including English speakers, white South Africans, and Europeans who oppose migration.
Earlier this month, Trump planned to slash US refugee admissions from a target of 125,000 last year under the Biden administration to as few as 7,500 in the upcoming fiscal year, according to ABC News.
The proposed changes to the US refugee programme would focus on how well applicants can fit into American society. Refugees might also be asked to take classes on US history, values, and cultural norms.
“The sharp increase in diversity has reduced the level of social trust essential for the functioning of a democratic polity. The administration should only welcome refugees who can be fully and appropriately assimilated and are aligned with the president’s objectives,” according to one of the documents.

Donald Trump is planning a massive revamp of the IRS that will allow him to target wealthy Democratic donors who the White House believes could be funding nefarious political activities.
Scott Bessent – the interim IRS Commissioner – has appointed advisor Gary Shapley to gather a list of candidates to potentially face criminal inquiries, including billionaire Democrat funder George Soros.
Trump also has cooperation from Congress where Senator Ted Cruz introduced legislation to go after funders of this weekend’s anti-Trump ‘No Kings’ protests under the RICO Act.
‘Follow the money. Cut off the money,’ Cruz told Sean Hannity Wednesday. ‘You look at this No Kings rally – there’s considerable evidence that George Soros and his network is behind funding these rallies which may well turn into riots.’
Cruz added that he’s ‘introduced legislation that would allow DOJ to use RICO to prosecute the money that is funding these No Kings Protests.’
Soros and his son have long been a boogeyman for his massive spending toward Democrats and George the only person known to be on Shapley’s list.
Soros’ Open Society Foundation is the world’s largest funder of left-wing causes.
A recent study, The Marble Hand Illusion, demonstrates that by simple manipulation of perceptual input, people can be induced to change their perceptions of their own bodies.

Our body is made of flesh and bones. We know it, and in our daily lives all the senses constantly provide converging information about this simple, factual truth. But is this always the case? Here we report a surprising bodily illusion demonstrating that humans rapidly update their assumptions about the material qualities of their body, based on their recent multisensory perceptual experience. To induce a misperception of the material properties of the hand, we repeatedly gently hit participants’ hand with a small hammer, while progressively replacing the natural sound of the hammer against the skin with the sound of a hammer hitting a piece of marble. After five minutes, the hand started feeling stiffer, heavier, harder, less sensitive, unnatural, and showed enhanced Galvanic skin response (GSR) to threatening stimuli. Notably, such a change in skin conductivity positively correlated with changes in perceived hand stiffness. If people can change physical perception of their hand in five minutes, our sense of the world around us must be as susceptible.
Our sense of our bodies in the world depends on the world around us. Our sense of our minds in the world depends on the people around us. We speak to ourselves with the same language we use with others.
If our core interpretations of self and other are wrong, we will make downstream mistakes and bring suffering to ourselves and others.
If those same interpretations are right, we will make downstream improvements.
The world answers us through science, reason, and imagination. Other people answer us on their own volition. We can get immediate truthful responses from them if they are willing.
Other people are the only entities in the world that can communicate in detail with us about their interpretations at a level commensurate with our own minds.
Since our interpretations include them, we can best improve those interpretations with the help of them.
