Telegram founder Pavel Durov transferred from police custody to court after arrest in France
Paris CNN — Telegram founder Pavel Durov was released from police custody in France on Wednesday and transferred to court for questioning ahead of a possible indictment, prosecutors told CNN, days after his dramatic arrest at a Paris airport.
The Russian-born billionaire exited the anti-fraud office outside Paris in what appeared to be a police vehicle on Wednesday afternoon, according to a CNN producer there.
The Paris prosecutor’s office said he would now face “initial questioning and possible indictment” at a court in the French capital.
Durov, 39, was detained at Paris’s Bourget Airport on Saturday on a warrant related to Telegram’s lack of moderation. He was being investigated on charges relating to a host of crimes, including allegations that his platform was complicit in aiding fraudsters, drug traffickers and people spreading child pornography.
“You cannot make it safe against criminals and open for governments,” Durov told CNN in 2016. “It’s either secure or not secure.”
The issue comes down to the highlighted quote from Durov above. At first glance, it may seem reasonable for government, even an ideally good government, to control how criminals communicate electronically. Upon more thought, one wonders why should even an ideally good government presuppose this right of search, seizure, judgement and censorship against electronic communication? Isn’t it enough for even an ideally good government to pursue criminals as they have always been charged to do? That is, without summary search, seizure, judgement and censorship? Compounding factors are no one in their right mind trusts any real-world government with those over-the-top powers, and yet we all know they do it anyway, despite the law. So, should they alone have privacy in their communications, which they abuse against all of us, or should all of us have privacy in our communications which only some of us will abuse? ABN
United Arab Emirates calls on France to provide ‘all consular services for Durov’
Telegram in a statement defended its operations, saying it abides by European Union laws and its content moderation is “within industry standards and constantly improving”.
Durov, the company added, had “nothing to hide and travels frequently in Europe”.
French media reports that Durov was detained on an arrest warrant alleging his messaging platform had been used for money laundering, drug trafficking and other offences.
A French investigative judge extended Durov’s detention order on Sunday night, French media reported, but he had not been charged and few details were available on the investigation.
A statement from the Paris prosecutor’s office said Durov’s police custody order was extended on Monday evening for up to 48 hours.
Under French law, Durov can remain in custody for questioning for up to four days. After that, judges must decide to either charge or release him.

We continue referencing the key staffing challenges and positions for Trump 2025, in part to frame a proactive outline and in part to highlight the challenges within several positions that have been corrupted by the administrative state. Today we look at Main Justice, the DOJ in DC.
Main Justice works closely with the FBI on what is loosely termed federal “law and order.” We will address the FBI silo in another outline, choosing to focus exclusively on Main Justice first. There are several positions within the DOJ that are familiar as a result of the modern weaponization that took place.
FBI HQ left, Main Justice HQ right
As an institution, Main Justice is now almost exclusively a Lawfare targeting mechanism. The Dept of Justice unilaterally focuses all criminal investigative resources against the political enemies of the Administrative State.
This is not to say Republicans are targets, because often the republicans are beneficiaries of the targeting operation. Think about the example of Main Justice working with the IRS to target the Tea Party groups in 2010 and 2011.
The Republicans were much more opposed to the Tea Party than the Democrats were. The professional republican apparatus was furious about the primary victories of the Tea Party, and subsequently benefitted from the DOJ targeting of the various patriot movements.
Main Justice targets individuals, organizations and systems that government officials and politicians determine are a threat to the power structure. The Intelligence Community use their ability to conduct electronic surveillance to discover evidence against their targets. The IC then feeds the evidence to Main Justice giving them the targeting coordinates. The DOJ takes action based on the information from the IC, often using the FBI as the enforcement mechanism.
The entire structure of Main Justice as an institution is corrupt, top to bottom. Much like the FBI, there is no agency, office, or subsidiary set of personnel within the DOJ that is not compromised by the modern mission of the organization. This is a critical point to accept, because if it is not accepted then we repeat the mistakes of thinking an Attorney General alone can correct the problem. They cannot.
Within the DOJ there are several divisions that must be addressed simultaneously if any effort to take it down to brass tacks is going to succeed. This cannot be a delicate surgical approach, the effort to remove the corrupt lesion will need chainsaws not scalpels. The fine surgical details and cleaning will be for the next administration.

The state of Maine’s new laws barring government officials from using or purchasing Chinese hardware and other technologies is officially in effect.
The new requirements from the State of Maine Office of Information Technology (Maine IT), passed this year with bipartisan support from the state legislature, went into effect last week.
The office published the first version of a list of information technology products, companies, and websites originating in foreign adversary nations, such as China, from which Maine will no purchase goods or services.

Ohio ban on gender-affirming care for minors upheld by judge
Aug 6 (Reuters) – An Ohio judge on Tuesday upheld a Republican-backed state law banning gender-affirming care such as puberty blockers and hormones for transgender minors, rebuffing a challenge by families of transgender adolescents.
The ruling by Judge Michael Holbrook of the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas came after a non-jury trial last month. Holbrook had previously blocked the law from taking effect while he heard the case.
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost welcomed the decision, spokesperson Bethany McCorkle said in a statement.
“This case has always been about the legislature’s authority to enact a law to protect our children from making irreversible medical and surgical decisions about their bodies,” McCorkle said.
