Gardasil Settlement Will Result in $50M Payout by HPV Vaccine Manufacturer

Merck & Co. has reached an agreement to pay $50 million to settle hundreds of Gardasil lawsuits, which raise allegations that the controversial HPV vaccine’s side effects left young adults with serious neurological and other adverse health problems.

The Gardasil settlement was reported by Bloomberg News on June 4, indicating that the deal was confirmed in an emailed statement from Merck officials. Following years of litigation, Merck claims that the payouts should resolve all lawsuits over the HPV vaccine, except for one remaining case.

First introduced in 2006, Gardasil is a widely used vaccine administered to young girls and boys for the prevention of human papillomavirus, or HPV, infections, which can cause cervical cancer and other forms of cancer. HPV is sexually transmitted, and the vaccine has been promoted as an important tool for preventing HPV-related cancers later in life.

A 5.3-million-year-old deep-sea whale necropolis in the Diamantina Zone

Abstract

Whale falls are biodiversity oases at seabeds1,2,3,4,5,6, yet their record from the oceans has remained sparse and fragmentary6,7. Here we report the discovery of a vast whale necropolis in the Diamantina Zone (4,616- to 7,001-m depth), extending about 1,200 km along the sea floor of the southeastern Indian Ocean. This area has a deep and extensive accumulation comprising five modern natural whale-fall communities and 476 fossil cetaceans recorded. We show that carcasses host specialized communities dominated by brittle stars, bone-boring worms and chemosynthesis-based bivalves and that the fossil record in this area comprises both extant and extinct deep-diving beaked whales. Isotopic dating shows that whale falls in this region have occurred since at least 5.3 million years ago. These findings reshape the understanding of the limits and biogeography of whale-fall ecosystems and establish some deep sea floors as a fossil archive for tracing cetacean evolution over geological time.

CANADA: Asian Trade Officials Remind Canada that All Deals are Contingent on Access to USA Market

An interesting article in Japan Times reinforces several insider trade discussions that have been taking place over the past eighteen months.  Essentially, all trade deals with Canada are contingent upon their access to the USA market.  Lose the USMCA trade deal, and any trade terms between Asian and Canadian counterparts are null and void.

This is not the first time this background from key trade nations has been shared with Canada.  Japan told Canada last year that most sector trade, specifically the auto industry, was contingent upon tariff-free access to the U.S. market.  If Canada loses the USMCA, the terms of trade change completely.

This reality is now surfacing in comments directly from the Canadian trade teams and business insiders within Canada.  They are now admitting without the USMCA their leverage for trade with other countries disappears.  This is a considerable admission from within Canada government that has not yet become part of the average Canadian understanding.

If Canada loses their trade agreement with the USA, all other countries will modify their trade agreements with Canada.  Think about the leverage within that reality, overlay the Canadian government’s severe anti-Trump mindset, and you quickly realize just how dangerous Mark Carney is for Canada.

Citizens told to stay quiet.

If this happened here in Japan, it would already be a civil war.
Why isn’t the British military staging a coup? What are they even doing?

This makes absolutely no sense to us. Can any British person explain this madness?

The Pattern Across the Programmes

In 2022, the New England Journal of Medicine published the results of the NordICC trial — the first randomised controlled study of colonoscopy screening ever conducted. Over 84,000 people were followed for ten years. The trial found an 18% reduction in cancer incidence and no significant reduction in cancer deaths. To prevent a single case of colorectal cancer, 455 people had to be invited for screening. To prevent a single death, the numbers were statistically indistinguishable from zero.¹

This is the pattern.

Across the major screening programmes — mammography, PSA, Pap, colonoscopy, lung CT — when the question is whether the screened population actually outlives the unscreened population, the benefit largely disappears.² The statistic the programmes advertise is disease-specific mortality: deaths from the disease the test is looking for. The statistic they bury is all-cause mortality: whether the screened group, taken as a whole, lives longer. The two numbers are not the same. You can reduce deaths from one disease while total deaths remain flat — because treatment has killed as many people as the disease prevented, or because the disease you found was never going to kill anyone.²

The screened do not live longer than the unscreened. They are more likely to spend their remaining years monitored, biopsied, cut, and medicated for conditions that would not have harmed them. This essay catalogues twelve tests that produce that conversion, organised by the four mechanisms through which it is achieved.

World-first: therapy to make cells young again trialled in a person

Test time has arrived: the first person has been treated in a highly anticipated gene-therapy trial that aims to coax aged cells to take on a younger identity.

The clinical trial is testing an innovative technique that involves turning on three genes that can ‘partially reprogram’ old cells, allowing them to behave as if they were young again. Some scientists argue that partial reprogramming could rejuvenate old organs. But this trial will test the activation of these three genes as an approach for treating disease — in this case, a form of glaucoma, a condition that can cause blindness.

The hope is that the proteins encoded by the genes will enable regeneration of neurons in the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain and is damaged in people with glaucoma. These neurons are not normally capable of regeneration. The company sponsoring the trial, Life Biosciences in Boston, Massachusetts, announced today that it had treated its first participant.

Stephen Ogilvie, 44 years old, suffered a severe knife attack in Belfast on Monday, June 8, 2026

Ogilvie is currently in serious condition in the hospital, having lost his left eye and suffering extensive wounds to his face, neck, and back during an assault described by witnesses as an attempted beheading. 

The attacker, Hadi Alodid, a 30-year-old Sudanese national, was arrested at the scene and charged with attempted murder, possession of a knife, and making threats to kill.

The man accused of fatally stabbing a young Ukrainian refugee aboard a North Carolina train erupted in court on Tuesday, screaming at a federal judge moments before he was formally declared unfit to stand trial.

Decarlos Brown Jr, 35, repeatedly interrupted proceedings during a hearing in Charlotte, demanding to know whether the judge had reviewed his mental health evaluation and insisting he wanted to press charges against the FBI.

Brown continued shouting as court officers moved to escort him from the courtroom, making remarks about having ‘material in his body’ and asking whether the judge had received a letter from his mother.

US District Judge Kenneth D Bell ordered Brown committed to a federal medical facility for treatment after mental health experts concluded he is presently unable to understand the legal proceedings against him or properly assist in his own defense.

Belfast attack sparks international outrage, with demands for immediate deportations and ‘total intolerance toward this barbarism’

The horrific attempted murder of a man in Belfast has sparked international outrage from major figures.  

Harrowing footage captured at around 10.30pm on Monday evening appeared to show a man, described by police as a 30-year-old asylum seeker who had been granted indefinite leave to remain in Northern Ireland, violently stabbing another man in the street. 

The video shows a man – named today as Hadi Alodid – standing astride a bloodied victim, holding a knife to his throat and his fist in the air. 

Police said a kitchen knife was recovered from the scene. 

The man, named by residents as Stephen Ogilvie, suffered severe knife wounds to his face, neck and back. 

In the wake of Monday night’s attack and violent riots across the city on Tuesday, many across Europe and the US reacted with rage. 

Santiago Abascal, the leader of hard-right Spanish party Vox, said on social media: ‘Europe is not condemned to passively coexist with those who stab, slit throats and rape in broad daylight every day.

‘There is another path. There is another future. Total intolerance towards this barbarity, and immediate deportations.’

Woman with dementia shares first words in five years after taking psilocybin

…While dementia, which affects 7 million Americans, worsens over time, doctors in Brazil, where the woman lives, sought to find out if the hallucinogen psilocybin – found in ‘magic mushrooms’ – could stall her decline. 

Doctors writing in a medical journal said the woman was given 5g of psilocybin – a large dose sometimes nicknamed a ‘heroic dose’ – in a supervised session, which triggered profuse sweating and a drop in body temperature before she entered a long sleep-like state. 

But after about 19 hours, the woman began having conversations on her own, which lasted several hours. 

Over the next few days, she was also able to control her bladder, dress and walk by herself and hold eye contact and smile at her loved ones. 

A month later, the woman was given a second 3g dose of psilocybin. Instead of falling asleep, she was reportedly conversational and expressive the whole time, describing emotional scenes like surfing with her son on a peaceful island. 

The woman also spontaneously told her healthcare team, ‘It is pleasant to come here.’ 

‘Facial expressivity, emotional reciprocity, spontaneous humor, and gait agility appeared markedly improved,’ doctors from the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil wrote in the journal Frontiers in Neuroscience. 

There were no adverse effects, which can include agitation and cardiovascular instability, such as a high heart rate or blood pressure.
