A new study from the University of Gothenburg has revealed that Sweden’s Viking Age population suffered from severe oral and maxillofacial diseases, sinus and ear infections, osteoarthritis, and other ailments. Researchers used modern X-ray techniques to examine Viking skulls, uncovering a range of health issues that would have significantly impacted daily life.
This study builds on previous research that examined a large number of teeth from the Viking Age population of Varnhem, a site in Sweden’s Västergötland province known for its extensive burial grounds and well-preserved skeletons. Now, odontologists at the University of Gothenburg have expanded the research by analyzing entire skulls using computed tomography (CT) scans.
Signs of Chronic Illness and Infections
The findings, published in British Dental Journal Open, suggest that the fifteen individuals whose skulls were examined had suffered from a wide range of diseases. The CT scans revealed pathological bone growths in the cranium and jawbone, indicating infections and other conditions. Some individuals showed evidence of chronic sinus or ear infections, which left visible traces in the surrounding bone structures. Osteoarthritis and various dental diseases were also common. All of the skulls examined belonged to adults who died between the ages of 20 and 60.
A new study by an international team of scholars, including faculty at Binghamton University, suggests that Neanderthals experienced a dramatic loss of genetic variation during the course of their evolution, foreshadowing their eventual extinction.
The study, co-authored by Professor of Anthropology Rolf Quam and graduate student Brian Keeling, measured the morphological diversity in the semicircular canals, structures of the inner ear responsible for our sense of balance, in two exceptional collections of human fossils from the sites of Atapuerca (Spain) and Krapina (Croatia), as well as from various European and Western Asian sites.

“The development of the inner ear structures is known to be under very tight genetic control, since they are fully formed at the time of birth,” said Quam. “This makes variation in the semicircular canals an ideal proxy for studying evolutionary relationships between species in the past since any differences between fossil specimens reflect underlying genetic differences. The present study represents a novel approach to estimating genetic diversity within Neandertal populations.”
The Atapuerca fossils—referred to as “pre-Neanderthals”—date to about 400,000 years ago and represent the earliest fossils that anthropologists consider clear Neandertal ancestors. The Neanderthals emerged around 250,000 years ago from these populations which inhabited the Eurasian continent between 500,000 and 250,000 years ago. The Croatian site of Krapina represents the most complete collection of early Neanderthals and dates to approximately 130,000 years ago. The researchers calculated the amount of morphological diversity (i.e., disparity) of the semicircular canals of both samples, comparing them with each other and with a sample of “classic” Neanderthals of different ages and geographical origins.
Washington Post columnist Jennifer Rubin is being ridiculed for calling Donald Trump‘s cabinet nominations ‘1,000 shades of white’.
Rubin, 62, a former conservative commentator at the Jeff Bezos-owned paper, now largely advocates for Democrats and on her podcast, ‘Jen Rubin’s Green Room.’
Speaking on MSNBC Rubin did not hold back as she ripped Trump’s nominations over the color of their skin.
‘Many of these people including Tulsi Gabbard have backgrounds that would never make them eligible for any government post, let alone for secretaries of these important government agencies,’ Rubin began.
‘But I do think there are a couple of things going on. First, I have to comment, when you put up all of those faces it was a thousand shades of white. Have you noticed that?’

It is a basic Buddhist moral tenet that you must be aware of whom you are helping and why. It is not right to just give to anyone who claims they need help. I am sure many Christians or Christian-influenced peoples in the West have made this mistake of unwise giving personally, as well as collectively through government misguided largess. “Vile individual.” That was how Sir Keir Starmer, Britain’s leftist prime minister, has described Axel Rudakubana, the teenaged Rwandan Black who horrifically murdered three White schoolgirls in Southport last year. Whites need to build a community of white-white fellowship that is able to talk about the world without pretending, minus the brainwashing, minus the woke-speak. We can and should blame leaders in white countries who have deliberately ruined their nations through immigration. But we also have to blame ourselves for collectively not speaking truthfully to each other or listening carefully to each other when truth is spoken to us. Researchers have discovered what may be the world’s oldest three-dimensional map, located within a quartzitic sandstone megaclast in the Paris Basin.
The Ségognole 3 rock shelter, known since the 1980s for its artistic engravings of two horses in a Late Palaeolithic style on either side of a female pubic figuration, has now been revealed to contain a miniature representation of the surrounding landscape.
Dr Anthony Milnes from the University of Adelaide’s School of Physics, Chemistry and Earth Sciences, participated in the research led by Dr Médard Thiry from the Mines Paris – PSL Centre of Geosciences.
Dr Thiry’s earlier research, following his first visit to the site in 2017, established that Palaeolithic people had “worked” the sandstone in a way that mirrored the female form, and opened fractures for infiltrating water into the sandstone that nourished an outflow at the base of the pelvic triangle.
New research suggests that part of the floor of the sandstone shelter which was shaped and adapted by Palaeolithic people around 13,000 years ago was modelled to reflect the region’s natural water flows and geomorphological features.
“What we’ve described is not a map as we understand it today — with distances, directions, and travel times — but rather a three-dimensional miniature depicting the functioning of a landscape, with runoff from highlands into streams and rivers, the convergence of valleys, and the downstream formation of lakes and swamps,” Dr Milnes explains.

A new study published in Research in Social Stratification and Mobility suggests that the transmission of cognitive ability from parents to children is primarily driven by genetics, with little influence from shared environmental factors like family resources. The findings challenge traditional assumptions in social mobility research that often attribute these correlations primarily to socio-economic status..
..The German TwinLife survey is a large, longitudinal study designed to explore the interplay between genetic and environmental factors in shaping various life outcomes, including cognitive abilities, educational attainment, and social mobility. The survey focuses on same-sex twin pairs and their biological families, enabling researchers to separate the effects of genetic inheritance from those of shared family environments. For example, monozygotic twins, who share 100% of their genetic material, can be compared with dizygotic twins, who share about 50% of their genetic material, to estimate the relative contributions of genetic and environmental factors.
By incorporating multiple family members—including parents and siblings—across four birth cohorts, the survey spans an extensive developmental range, from early childhood (ages 5–6) to young adulthood (ages 21–25). This breadth allows researchers to examine how genetic and environmental influences evolve over the life course.
…The results provided evidence that the intergenerational transmission of cognitive ability is driven primarily by genetic inheritance rather than shared environmental factors. Across all age groups examined, the researchers found minimal evidence that parental cognitive ability significantly influenced children’s cognitive development through environmental mechanisms. Instead, the observed similarities in cognitive abilities between parents and children were largely attributed to shared genetic factors.
…“The key takeaway is that the similarity in cognitive ability between parents and children appears to be driven primarily by shared genes rather than shared environment. While we often assume that parents influence their children’s cognitive development through factors like education style, resources, and parenting, our study finds little evidence for environmental transmission that occurs through parental cognitive ability specifically.”
So much for white privilege. White people have amply demonstrated that they have the right kinds of genes to produce massive complex civilizations that function well. Obviously, the obverse is just as true — peoples who do not form well-functioning complex civilizations probably lack the genetics to do so. I do think white and Chinese, Japanese, Koreans and some others have a moral obligation to help less endowed parts of the world. But I do not think we are in any way required to admit millions of people who, no matter the DEI given them, will never be able to perform in ways that assist or improve complex societies made up of people not of their genetic endowment. I myself can speak Chinese and like many aspects of Chinese culture and am able to succeed in China, but prefer living in USA. The genetic endowment is different. UPDATE: Another point is within white societies, many whites, including highly intelligent ones, are perfectly content doing menial and blue collar jobs without complaint. White people at all levels are pretty good are cooperating with each other and honest enough that most laws are largely followed and most jobs are done conscientiously. I have no idea what to make of this any more than I do of Shawn Ryan. Our universal inability to be certain of who or what is in power and what information is correct or false is the core basis of KOBK game theory. Neither can the hierarchs at the top, save in rare situations, be completely sure they are really at the top. Bosses get offed all the time. Our uncertainty of all information does not go away as we become more powerful, influential, or wealthy. Who controls Elon Musk? Surely, Elon knows, right? No, he has no idea if who he believes are his masters are his masters. Those ‘masters’ might just be messengers, handlers, spies. If one hierarch decisively defeats his rival he can probably be sure the rival has been defeated, but KOBK does not stop there because someone might stab him in the back in the next second. People at the top are surely holding themselves in a tight grid of oaths, omerta, volitional bribe material, and the sure threat of death and disgrace if they break rank. The reward is wealth and power. Top people probably can and do quit or retire but their oaths remain. Xi Jinping is an example of a particularly ruthless/strong hierarch. America’s success has not been due primarily to its citizens being smarter than the global average. The main reason is the country’s high level of social trust — a result of equally high levels of empathy, guilt proneness, and rule following.
If humans vary in their capacity for intelligence, why can’t they also vary in their capacity for empathy, guilt proneness, or willingness to follow rules? These mental traits are likewise heritable, and they likewise vary in adaptive value, being more valuable in some cultures than in others (Frost, 2020).
Perhaps you believe that the above traits form a single package. Perhaps you believe that intelligent people are normally good. Yes, cunning psychopaths do exist, but they’re the exception … aren’t they?
That belief is true, up to a point. As human groups increased in size and complexity, they underwent selection not only for intelligence but also for traits that help people trust each other, get along with each other, and interact peacefully.
However, some human groups have gone farther in that direction than others. Some have created truly large and complex societies, to the point that the sphere of social trust mostly encompasses people who are neither friends nor close kin.
Large high-trust societies have arisen only in Europe, especially northwestern Europe, and in East Asia. In both regions, we see similar trajectories of mental evolution: higher capacity for intelligence, less willingness to use violence to settle personal disputes, and greater willingness to follow and enforce rules. But there are differences. East Asians have created “shame cultures” — wrong behavior is discouraged largely by the feelings of shame you experience when other people know you have broken a rule. In contrast, Europeans have created “guilt cultures” — wrong behavior is discouraged largely by the feelings of guilt you experience after breaking a rule, even when you are the sole witness.
…Of course, high intelligence has not evolved solely in the large high-trust societies of Europe and East Asia. It has evolved elsewhere, typically in small groups that trade with a much larger one while feeling no special responsibility for its wellbeing. Such groups have to adapt to the cognitive demands of trade — literacy, numeracy, planning, budgeting — but this adaptation doesn’t require turning the entire space of social interaction into a high-trust space. Trust has to be maintained only in smaller spaces, particularly the buyer-seller relationship. Although traders may perform acts of philanthropy for their host society, such acts are done to create a friendly climate and are not involuntary acts of guilt or empathy.
In sum, high intelligence does not act alone in creating a high-trust society. It acts in combination with other factors that channel it in the right direction, specifically by constraining behavior through high levels of empathy, guilt, and rule following. Without those constraints, high intelligence may do more harm than good.
…Americans love to play fair. To them, it seems only “fair” that immigration should be based on a single metric that applies equally to everyone — in this case, a college degree. Meanwhile, it also seems “fair” that everyone should get a college degree, with the eventual result that a college degree no longer means much. In this, and in many other ways, “fairness” is piling up one social contradiction on top of another. At some point, Americans will have to accept the limitations of fairness and the reality of human differences.
At present, the best solution would be to let in as few immigrants as possible. Any admission criterion, no matter how “fair” — criminal record, university transcript, letters of reference — will prove to be worthless, either because it can be faked or because it simply fails to measure the innate characteristics that prospective immigrants will pass on to their descendants.
