The Pressure Campaign on Spotify to Remove Joe Rogan Reveals the Religion of Liberals: Censorship

…Democrats are not only the dominant political faction in Washington, controlling the White House and both houses of Congress, but liberals in particular are clearly the hegemonic culture force in key institutions: media, academia and Hollywood. That is why it is a mistake to assume that we are near the end of their orgy of censorship and de-platforming victories. It is far more likely that we are much closer to the beginning than the end. The power to silence others is intoxicating. Once one gets a taste of its power, they rarely stop on their own.

…In modern-day American liberalism… censorship is a virtual religion. They simply cannot abide the idea that anyone who thinks differently or sees the world differently than they should be heard. That is why there is much more at stake in this campaign to have Rogan removed from Spotify than whether this extremely popular podcast host will continue to be heard there or on another platform. If liberals succeed in pressuring Spotify to abandon their most valuable commodity, it will mean nobody is safe from their petty-tyrant tactics. But if they fail, it can embolden other platforms to similarly defy these bullying tactics, keeping our discourse a bit more free for just awhile longer.

The entire article is well-worth reading, most of all by liberals who will surely ignore it. Might be good material to send to people you know who have fallen into the censorship trap. ABN

…”This is not political,” he said. “These are not things that are left or right or have any political baggage,” Guo said. “When you think about these bigger companies, what they have put in place around things like misinformation, what they deem that to be, for instance, that’s their prerogative.” 

He added: “Our moderation is based on these core concepts that, we think, are universal.” 

Guo said TRUTH Social’s moderation approach is centered around Hive’s core concepts, and said they want to “make sure” they can “identify this type of content and proactively prevent it from reaching their users.”

“They are not doing things like trying to censor any political talk—we don’t have models for that or models for misinformation,” he said. “We focus on a problem that is more objective.”

Nunes doubled down on that point, reminding that TRUTH Social will be “open for all ideas, all political debate from the left to the right.”

“We’re not going to censor anybody because they have a different opinion about, for example, a COVID vaccine,” Nunes said. “That is what the open internet is all about—it should be for the free flow of debate and ideas all over the globe, so that people can learn from one another and debate with one another.”

This is the hard part for Truth Social: 1) you absolutely do have to moderate user input or you will be inundated with garbage; 2) the devil’s in the details. I wish them the best. We need social media with a much broader social and political content policy. Let’s see what happens. ABN

…For all its flaws, Gab’s saving grace is that it actually does what it claims: It says it is a free speech platform, and it is a free speech platform. Looking at these new “Right-wing Twitter alternatives,” none of them appear to have any intention of actually standing by free speech in any meaningful way.

You can forget about a new free speech platform coming from Donald Trump. Torba has recounted how Trump’s people reached out to him and said that Torba would have to change Gab’s terms of service to ban anti-Semitism if he wanted Trump to make Gab his new home base. Torba declined. It is also known that alt tech site Rumble changed its terms of service to ban anti-Semitism mere days before Trump’s endorsement of the site.

Trump has announced his own social media site, Truth Social, which is supposed to be launching in February, but given recent history, I think we all know what we can expect it to be like, and it is nothing to get one’s hopes up for.

I have high hopes for Trump’s Truth Social but fear it will censor too much. One way around that is to provide several levels of filters individual users can choose for themselves. A major part of being a word-using human is using words to describe and understand other humans. In our private lives this process should not be interfered with in any way among consenting adults. But today’s world includes many anonymous adults who may want to join discussions like that. It’s no good when some discussions are stopped and others are not as happens on all Big Tech platforms today, with the exception of Gab. The site the above article comes from, Unz.com, censors almost not at all and is refreshing for that reason. I would rather hear what people think than not. The more you see of disturbing intellectual content, the less disturbing it becomes because you also see the arguments against it. If something is true, no matter how disturbing, it should not be censored. At some point we have to grow out of the legacy media cage and the sense that alternative platforms are too far out. ABN

China's digital manhunt goes global: The final piece in our series on China's outbound propaganda and censorship shows how police use ever more sophisticated tech to find and silence those overseas. They target Chinese students and Chinese Americans alike.

For a sense of what that looks like, here's a video of Chinese police harassing a Chinese student living in Australia. They summoned her father in China to the station, called her on his phone, and demanded she delete a Twitter account that mocked Xi Jinping.

One contractor who unmasks critics in the US for security authorities uses open-source investigation tools, databases leaked on the dark web, and other records, like voting and license registries. He has been assigned journalists and Chinese-American policy analysts.

The goal is to find China connections and leverage them to enforce self censorship. His reports label speech on a numerical system 1: criticizing leaders/planning political action 2: broader criticisms that harm China's image and ethnic separatism 3: libel, gambling etc.
