Psychology and mental illness

The essay The Myth of Mental Illness by Paul Lutus hits hard. I agree with Lutus that there is a great deal of deceit and self-deceit in psychology and a grotesque paucity of physical evidence, but it’s not just psychologists who are to blame—many school teachers are involved in the support or even initiation of dubious psychiatric diagnoses while general practitioners are responsible for the majority of psychiatric prescriptions.

I still believe there is a valuable role to be played by psychologists, if only because they have spent more time with troubled individuals than most of us. That said, readers can make up their own minds about Lutus’s essay, which I recommend.

What I want to do in this post is point out the ways that FIML practice does not have the sorts of problems Lutus describes. FIML is not (yet) supported by large studies because not enough people have done it and we don’t have the money to conduct the studies. Nonetheless, FIML practice is based on real data agreed upon by both partners and in this respect is evidence-based, though the kind of evidence used in FIML practice is not the same kind that is used in large studies of many people. (Please see A Theory of FIML for a rough idea of how FIML can be understood from a scientific point of view, and how it could be falsified.)

In my view, FIML is a growing tip of science. It is an idea coupled with a practice or technique. It works with real data that is objective in that both partners must agree on it. It is based primarily on words just spoken, thus limiting distracting generalizations and ambiguity. It allows for and relies upon comprehensive mutual understanding of what partners are actually saying. Normally, both FIML partners will experience a sense of relief after a FIML session because both have achieved a fuller, shared understanding of whatever was in question. Normally, both partners will also be capable of describing the event in question in ways that are essentially the same. Ultimately, partners will realize that many of their FIML discussions have been arising from on-going mistaken interpretations that they had always believed were true. Partners will also come to understand that simply using language to communicate—indeed, to communicate in any way at all—will lead eventually to serious misunderstandings and emotional suffering if their communication is never analyzed in a way similar to FIML practice. And all of the above will help partners understand how neuroses (mistaken interpretations) are formed and how they perdure. And this will gradually free them from neurosis and, it is hoped, most of what we now call “mental illness.”

Today, FIML is mostly an idea. That’s how science progresses. New ideas are explored, improved upon, or discarded. Though FIML has worked very well for me and my partner, I will happily discard the idea of it working for others if it can be shown to be ineffective.

On this site, we have frequently tied FIML practice to Buddhist practice because: 1) several core Buddhist ideas and practices greatly support FIML practice; 2) Buddhism is fundamentally a truth-seeking enterprise, somewhat like modern science but with greater emphasis on the experiences of the individual; and 3) we believe that in many ways FIML practice leads to the same liberative ends as Buddhist practice–freedom from delusion, unnecessary ambiguity, false ideas, emotional suffering.

UPDATE 7/16/21: We are still doing FIML and still strongly believe it is a powerful catalyst to positive transformation, both spiritual and psychological. ABN

PHOTOS: Looters ransack Bagram Air Base

Afghan locals started hawking basketballs, stereo speakers, laptop computers, bicycles and helmets, desk fans, guitars, and anything else they could get their hands on after looters ransacked a now-former American military base that was vacated by departing US soldiers in the dead of night Friday.

The US left Afghanistan’s Bagram Air Base after nearly 20 years by shutting off the electricity and slipping away without notifying the base’s new Afghan commander, who discovered the Americans’ departure more than two hours after they left, Afghan military officials said.

The Vioxx disaster

Before it was removed from the market in 2004, Vioxx may have hurt hundreds of thousands of patients, killing a third of them, a senior FDA investigator said at the time.

Dr. David Graham, in interviews and Congressional testimony, criticized his own agency’s approval process of the pain reliever.

Graham described the outcome of Vioxx as “a disaster,” one that is “unparalleled in the history of the United States” and that “constituted an unprecedented failure of the nation’s system of drug approval and oversight.”

Vioxx is a good example of how badly wrong the FDA can get it and how slow it can be to change bad decisions. ABN

“Top of the World” alliance requires good relations with Russia

Vladimir Putin plans to press Joe Biden on human rights violations against Trump supporters. This makes me think the Russians know something of what is coming. Picture Russia, right now aligned against Cabal, and with Americans who oppose Cabal. Suddenly Cabal is revealed, and a genuine treasonous syndicate working against all of America is cast out and demonized by a newly honest media. And there Russia is, saying it had been working for Americans, against that syndicate, and for Americans all along. It would be a brilliant play. And Republicans right now, even before then, are looking at a US government of traitors, and a Russian government trying to stand up for us as Biden attacks us. This is why Cabal has to make Russia the enemy – we would be natural allies. Also note, this is not something Cabal would do, if it had influence in Russia. Cabal would keep the pressure on conservatives in America, and not give us any encouragement or support.

All “top of the world” countries are natural allies: USA, Canada, Europe, Russia, Mongolia, Korea, Japan and a few others. We all share political, economic, and geographic mutual interests and many of us also share deep cultural and religious traditions. This natural alliance could and would take place if the shadow elite in the West would get out of the way and if Russia would provide strong assurances to former European satellites that reoccupation will never happen again.

RFK Jr on JFK, RFK, and vaccines

On youtube, RFK Jr talks with Ron Paul about the CIA, and reveals his grandfather Joe Kennedy was on a commission which called for dismantling the CIA. For the first ten minutes, RFK gets off on a tangent away from vaccines and basically says categorially, he believes the CIA killed both his father and JFK, and Sirhan was a Manchurian candidate programmed by MK Ultra. Yet you will never see on the news that the son of an assassinated Presidential candidate, the nephew of an assassinated President, and the senior member of the biggest political family in America, says the CIA killed President Kennedy and his brother, a Presidential candidate. It doesn’t even matter if the secret is kept or not. Even if it gets out, it is merely not reported on, and it is as if it never was revealed.
