HISTORY OF THE CREATION OF THE BIOSTATION “CLEAN FOREST”

In 1985, in the Toropetsky district of the Tver region, on the initiative of the spouses Svetlana and Valentin Pazhetnov, the Tropetsky stronghold of the Central Forest State Reserve was organized, with its center in the ancient village of Bubonichi (Bobonichi, 1540), to study the ecology and behavior of the brown bear in the usual territory regional economic use. The goal is to supplement the materials of field studies of this species, collected on the territory of the reserve, for writing the monograph “Brown Bear” (published in 1990, M., VO Agropromizdat, 213 p.). The lands closest to the village turned out to be the keepers of numerous cultural and historical monuments of the early Iron Age, forest biomes are well preserved, among which there are numerous forest lakes with clear water, wetlands of various genesis are represented.

In 1990, the Bubonitsky Bor Natural Monument was organized here (Decision of the Council of People’s Deputies of the Toropetsky District No. 113, dated May 29, 1990), in order to preserve and study typical natural biosensors of Western Valdai. On its territory (400 hectares) there are all types of forest formations (in miniature) found in Valdai, all berries, many Red Book plant species and some animals. Spruce stands of II-VI age classes and pine forests of I-V age classes are presented. In connection with the process of natural reforestation on indigenous (not plowed), rare lands in the area, these forests are close to indigenous types and are of high interest, both for studying in the context of school programs, and for demonstration in nature conservation and environmental education. . Separate plus trees are 120-160 years old.

In 1990, work began on rearing orphaned bear cubs in order to release them into the wild. The methodology is based on the study of the formation of behavior in the brown bear, conducted in the Central Forest Reserve in 1974-1984, under the guidance of prof. L.V. Krushinsky. Primary financial support for this work was provided by the MacArthur Foundation and RFBR. Since 1996, all work on rearing orphaned bear cubs has been carried out with the financial support of the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW). During the period 1990-2011, 186 cubs were released into the wild. Of these, 14 cubs were born in the zoos of Kazan, Belgorod and Nizhny Novgorod.

In 1993, on the basis of the Stronghold, the field Laboratory of Physiology and Genetics of Animal Behavior of the Department of Higher Nervous Activity of the Lomonosov Moscow State University began its work. M.V. Lomonosov, in collaboration with the Department of Neuroanatomy of the Zurich University of Anatomy (Switzerland). The purpose of the Laboratory is to study various aspects of behavior in animals in an experiment (headed by Prof. Hans-Peter Lipp). The stronghold acquired the significance of an international biological station, was named “Pure Forest”, with its center in the village of Bubonicy. With the support of the Toropetsk District Administration, a new road was laid to the village, and a major overhaul of electrical networks was carried out.

In 1999, the Toropetsky municipal biological reserve “Chisty Les” was organized, with an area of 35 km² (Decision of the Council of Deputies of the Toropetsky District No. 227, dated 04/06/99) in order to preserve unique natural and cultural-historical objects in the area of the biological station. In the same year, on the initiative and under the guidance of a group of scientists from the city of Tver (headed by Prof. V.M. Vorobyov) and local historians from the city of Toropets, a school of local historians was organized from local schoolchildren on a voluntary basis. Subsequently, with the support of the Tver Regional Committee of Natural Resources, the school grew into an ecological school-practice “Medvezhata”, with the participation of children from different regions of Central Russia in its work. The main goal of the eco-school is to familiarize with objects of nature and cultural and historical heritage, to acquire primary skills in scientific field work, to form a worldview that excludes the manifestation of violence and cruelty in everyday life, environmental, cultural, historical and environmental education. Work is underway to organize the Ecological and Educational Center “House of the Bear” and the “Museum of the Bear” on the basis of the biological station. The Government of the Tver region is considering the organization in the Toropetsky district of the “Chisty Les” reserve of regional, regional subordination.
