A good essay on framing, reading, and thinking

The essay A Framework for Reclaiming Reality is a great example of good reading on the Internet today.

The author, Jonathan Revusky, skewers a good deal of what passes for thought and analysis in modern society. Whether you agree with every point he makes, his case is a strong one and surely mostly correct.

A lot of the fun of articles like Revusky’s comes in the comments section. For essays like this, I usually read most of the first comments plus all of the author’s replies, but skip a good deal of the back-and-forth between commenters.

Revusky is concerned with macro-societal-and-history-level BS and he nails a lot of it. A good deal of what he describes is the same as what I often describe as “public semiotics,” political positions (and others) which function more as social signals than real thought and that often are dead wrong.

If you can see Revusky’s point on the macro scale, you should be able to also see that we all do a lot of that sort of thing on the micro and meso scales of interpersonal communication and belief.

I have categorized this post under “Buddhism” because I believe a good deal of what the Buddha meant by delusion is falling for BS public (and private) semiotics.

Unlawful detainment undone by well-informed citizen

This independent journalist shows up at a public office building with a legal freedom of information request. He finds himself surrounded by seven or eight cops asking him to leave for no reason.. he’s not broken any laws.. There’s a lot of back-and-forth here, and it may sound redundant, but he is brilliantly, politely, and assertively making his case.
He systematically disarmed all of them with his knowledge of the law. We all need to be more like this guy, and PS this has a very satisfying ending.

This is an interesting video. It’s a particularly well-done version of this genre, which most of us have seen before. It’s very good when citizens do stuff like this politely, forcefully, correctly and successfully. I hope the supervisor watches this video many times and learns deep lessons from it. Few citizens are strong enough or knowledgeable enough to pull this off while facing eight cops, so it’s great when someone does it and films all of it for everyone to see. ABN

Introduction

With the 250-year celebration of America’s independence, interest in the Founding Fathers has greatly increased. However, there is one taboo that has stood the test of those 250 years: Alexander Hamilton’s possible Jewishness and the Jewish origins of the American Revolution and USA. This topic is still often treated as a “Nazi conspiracy theory.” However, perhaps understanding American history requires looking through the lenses of both liberty and ethnicity.

The Austro-Libertarian economist and historian Murray Rothbard famously argued that America was conceived in liberty.

 This new frontier emerged largely unburdened by government taxes and monopolistic regulations, setting the stage for a vigorous intellectual contest between proponents of small and big government.[2] This ideological struggle has been vividly embodied by two opposite Founding Fathers: Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. This intellectual divide has also manifested among historians, with advocates of expansive government championing Hamilton, while defenders of limited government extol Jefferson.[3]

 Both camps agree that Hamilton was the architect of the U.S. government and financial system, yet they evaluate his legacy in diametrically opposed ways.

Hidden for 1,600 years: Incredible lost city discovered beneath Egypt’s desert with ancient church, coins and homes still intact

A remarkably well preserved 1,600-year-old city complete with a church, watchtowers and bustling streets has been unearthed beneath Egypt’s Western Desert.

Archaeologists have announced the discovery of a sprawling Byzantine-era settlement at the Dakhla Oasis.

Here, they unearthed homes with vaulted roofs, bread ovens, kitchens and stone mills that offer a rare glimpse into everyday life during the 4th century.

They also found around 200 inscribed pottery fragments recording commercial transactions, letters and a selection of coins.

The carefully planned settlement features broad north-south streets intersected by east-west roads to create public squares, while two watchtowers and a heavily fortified building protected its outskirts.

At its centre stands a basilica church overlooking one of the city’s main streets.

Experts say the discovery provides one of the clearest pictures yet of life in Egypt’s remote oases during the Byzantine Empire.

Feral teens filmed beating up female police officer at July 4 event… as conservative star Ann Coulter says ‘putting a small blonde woman in uniform’ was not a good idea

A group of feral [black] teenagers were caught on camera assaulting a female police officer at a Fourth of July event. 

The horrific footage of the brutal assault emerged following a block party in North Charleston, South Carolina, on Saturday night.  

The officer was seen being punched in the face by a female while a young man held her down, before another woman attacked her with what looked like a baton. 

Another officer managed to intervene as the officer is dragged away, by pushing the woman with the baton to the ground and grabbing another of the teens. 

He then resorted to using his taser which caused the horde of teens assaulting the officer to flee.

America at 250: The System Britain Stole and Trump is Taking Back

UPDATE: This is the best short explanation of what Trump and his administration are doing. It’s a must view if you want to understand USA. You can read into ‘the British System’ what you want, meaning who controls that? Despite the many distractions in the world today, Trump appears to be resolutely pursuing revitalization of the American System. For this reason alone, he is worth supporting. Elites that profit most from the ‘British’ System will be the ones who complain the most and who spend the most money advertising their POVs. After Intentionally Importing 50 million Migrants, Europe Declares a “Housing Crisis”

The EU President Ursula von der Leyen travelled to Ireland to deliver remarks as Ireland takes their turn in managing the bureaucratic affairs of the EU Commission.  As part of her speech to the audience, von der Leyen notes one of the biggest challenges facing the EU is a housing and affordability crisis.

In the last 10 years, Europe has intentionally allowed around 50 million migrants to arrive and claim asylum.  The majority of the EU citizens did not want this migrant influx.  EU leadership is now declaring a “housing crisis” created by their own migrant policies.

And how bad you are at interpreting what others say to you?

If not, you are living in a very muddled world that is probably “anchored” to nothing more than your “feelings,” your “identity,” or some form of extrinsic “belief” or “faith” in your nation, group, religion, career.

Either you are a sort of slave to a public semiotic (religion, ethnicity, career, etc.) or you are a sort of slave to your muddled interior—your volatile emotional sense of “who” you “are.”

The only way I know of to fully comprehend how badly you speak and listen is to do FIML practice.

You may understand in the abstract how wrong and ambiguous speech and listening frequently are, but if you don’t do FIML you won’t be able to see with any specificity  how wrong you are and where and why. If your understanding is only general or abstract, it will function as just another level of ambiguity, another source of mistakes.

Mildly sorry for being so blunt, but it’s true. Only FIML, or something very similar, can give you and your partner real-time access to objectively agreed upon communication mistakes being made between you. And there is no general or abstract substitute for that.

Even a single mistake can have massive consequences. But we all make dozens of mistakes every day.
