The wife of Kęstutis and mother of Vytautas the Great, her story is intertwined with legend. According to tradition, she was a vaidilutė – a keeper of the sacred pagan fire in Palanga – until Kęstutis took her to Trakai and married her.
According to tradition, Birutė was laid to rest in Palanga. Today, Birutė Hill – one of Lithuania’s most iconic sacred sites – still bears her name and keeps her memory alive.
